Shunda K: Rising from the Front Porch to Global Stages

Shunda K is a force of resilience, talent, and purpose. From writing songs on a karaoke machine on her grandmother’s front porch in Plant City, FL, to leading the internationally recognized group Yo! Majesty, Shunda K has always been driven by a passion for music and self-expression. Her artistry blends raw hip hop energy with life experiences, spiritual insight, and a commitment to raising the vibration of her audience. Through personal trials, homelessness, and industry obstacles, Shunda K has emerged as a voice of authenticity and empowerment, proving that music is more than entertainment—it’s a platform for transformation.

Origin Story – When did you first realize rap was more than just a hobby for you, and what was the moment that made you say, “This is it”?
I realized this at the age of 16 when me and two other guys from Plant City, FL created a group. We used to write songs and practice on the karaoke machine on my grandmother’s front porch. From there, I ventured out on my own and created a successful international band named Yo! Majesty as well as established myself as an international solo artist, Shunda K.

Creative Process – When you’re writing, do you start with the beat, the lyrics, or a feeling you want to capture?
I can write both ways, but mainly I write to beats that I’m feeling. It’s as if the music speaks to me and guides me on what to write, based on how I’m feeling.

Influences – Which artists or life experiences have shaped your style the most, and how can listeners hear that influence in your music?
Growing up, I listened to Twista, 8Ball & MJG, Outcast, Goodie Mob, Snoop, and Dre. My favorite group of all time is HTown, an R&B group from Texas. Between the two influences of both genres, this is what you will hear when you listen to my music. The content of my lyrics is very telling as well because I write about my life and my life’s experiences.

Defining Song – If someone had never heard your music before, which one track should they start with, and why?
The song they should start with is called “I Love Myself.” I am on a self-love and healing journey, so that song is the foundation of who I have become to be.

Challenges & Breakthroughs – What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve faced in your career, and how did you overcome it?
The hardest obstacle for me has been people in the industry who have tried to blackball me and keep me out of the public eye. I’ve had to be patient and wait on God because this has truly been a spiritual war. As these people are dealt with legally, I am seeing progress because I now have the opportunity to tell my story in the public domain. I’m grateful.

Storytelling – You’ve probably lived through moments your fans don’t know about—what’s one personal story behind a song that changed how you see life or music?
I was homeless for a couple years and lived on a deserted beach, in a tent. That experience taught me how to love myself and put me first. I had to gather wood every day in order to eat and stay warm. I had to bathe in the ocean and wash my clothes with the ocean water. Everything was hands-on. If I didn’t get up and do my due diligence, I wasn’t going to eat or stay clean and warm. That experience taught me to go hard for myself, and I apply those lessons to my life now that I’m stable. I make sure to put myself first in all aspects of life.

Industry Insight – How do you feel about the current state of hip hop, and where do you see yourself fitting into it?
The current state of Hip Hop is dead. It’s intentional to keep the vibration of the masses very low. I’m here to help raise the vibration of music in general, and this is one of the reasons I have been targeted. We know this earth is given into the hands of the wicked, but it’s time to balance the dark with the light. I’m here for it!

Authenticity – What’s the most misunderstood thing about you as an artist or person, and how does your music set the record straight?
My spiritual beliefs are out of this world, so the majority of people who know me think I’m crazy—lol. I don’t care. I know who I am and I know my purpose on this earth is to bring forth restoration. With that, I expect to be misunderstood. One thing people hate is change, but that change has come and I’m leading the pack.

Legacy – When people talk about you years from now, what do you want them to say about your impact on the culture?
I want the world to say that I did my part to help restore humanity back to peace and love. That’s my purpose, and it’s not a pretty journey, but I accepted the call and am doing my part, walking in my power and self-love.

Next Moves – What’s coming up next that fans should be excited about—whether it’s music, performances, or collaborations?
I have new music releases on the way for both Yo! Majesty and Shunda K, so y’all keep an eye out. We are also planning a world tour for both acts, so stay tuned!
